Why More Businesses Are Choosing Vrakas CPAs + Advisors

Estimated Time: 5 Minutes

Middle-market businesses should not have to choose between sophisticated capabilities and personal, accountable service.  At Vrakas, we believe they deserve both.

When we talk with business owners and leadership teams considering a change in accounting firms, the conversation rarely begins with a technical accounting or tax question.

More often, we hear that their current firm has become harder to navigate. Their service team keeps changing, questions take too long to answer, important matters surface later than they should, or somewhere along the way, the relationship simply stopped feeling like a relationship.

These businesses are not necessarily looking for a smaller or larger accounting firm. They are looking for the right firm: one with the technical depth and capabilities to support an increasingly complex and growing business, coupled with experienced professionals who remain accessible, responsive, and accountable to their needs.

At Vrakas, that is precisely the type of firm we are committed to building and sustaining for the long term.

Big-Firm Capabilities, Delivered with the Vrakas Difference

Middle-market businesses face increasingly sophisticated challenges. Growth may bring new reporting requirements, multi-state tax exposure, operational complexity, financing needs, ownership transitions, or acquisition activity. We see those challenges every day as we work with privately held businesses across industries, including family-owned, private equity-backed, and employee-owned companies.

Serving these businesses requires more than preparing a tax return or issuing an audited financial statement. It requires professionals who understand how accounting, tax, technology, operations, and ownership strategy fit together.

Vrakas provides a broad range of business services, including assurance, business tax planning and compliance, accounting advisory services, employee benefit plan audits, business valuations, Sage implementation and support, and transaction-related support. These services are delivered by teams that collaborate across disciplines rather than operating in separate silos. We’re proud to work with organizations across a wide range of industries, from construction and manufacturing to real estate, nonprofits, professional services, and technology. Our broad experience means we understand the day-to-day challenges organizations face and can offer practical solutions shaped by years of industry experience.

Clients gain access to the technical resources and specialized experience they would expect from a much larger firm, without layers of bureaucracy separating them from the people doing the work or making decisions. We often describe it as big-firm capabilities with a small-firm service touch. That is easy to say. The real test is whether clients can feel the difference through direct access to experienced decision-makers, knowing who is accountable for their relationship, receiving practical answers, and most importantly, knowing their question hasn’t disappeared in someone’s inbox.

Our “24-hour rule” reflects that mindset. It does not mean every complex issue can be fully resolved in a day. It means clients should hear from us, know that we understand the issue, and have clarity about what happens next.

A Relationship That Extends Beyond Compliance

High-quality compliance work remains fundamental to what we do. But a strong accounting firm relationship should create value beyond the required deliverables.

Our best client relationships are built through regular communication throughout the year. Those conversations help us understand where a business is going, spot issues earlier, and help leadership evaluate decisions before options become limited.

That might mean discussing the tax and financial implications of a transaction, strengthening reporting for a lender or investor, preparing for an ownership transition, improving financial processes, or connecting a client with an attorney, banker, insurance advisor, or other professionals who can help move an initiative forward.

The objective is not to complicate the relationship or manufacture additional projects. It is to understand the business well enough to recognize when our perspective can be useful.

Clients should not be surprised by their accounting firm. They should be better prepared because of their accounting firm.

“Fiercely Independent” Is More Than an Ownership Structure

The accounting profession is changing quickly. Consolidation, outside investment, and national expansion are reshaping many firms. Some of those changes will bring new capabilities and investment to the profession, but they can also change how decisions are made, how people are developed, and how clients are served.

Vrakas remains fiercely independent and locally led.

To us, independence is not simply a statement about who owns the firm. It means our decisions are made by people who know our clients, our team members, and the communities in which we work. From our offices in Brookfield, Kenosha, Madison, and downtown Chicago, we remain deeply connected to the businesses, organizations, and individuals we serve. This allows us to invest for the long term and protect the service model and culture that has defined Vrakas for nearly 60 years.

That does not mean standing still. We will continue to evolve, invest in technology, deepen our expertise, grow into new markets, hire exceptional talent, and expand our capabilities as our clients’ needs change. But we can do that without fundamentally changing who we are.

We can grow without treating growth as the objective. We can adopt new technology without removing the human judgment and accessibility that our clients value. We can expand our resources without creating unnecessary distance between clients and firm leadership. And we can invest in our people knowing that continuity and professional development directly affect the client experience.

Our independence lets us stay focused on three priorities: taking care of our clients, developing our people, and being good stewards of a firm we intend to build for the long term.

The Firm We Intend to Keep Building

As a shareholder at Vrakas, I am proud that we can offer business clients substantial technical depth while maintaining a relationship-driven approach. But I also know we must earn that reputation repeatedly through our actions.

It is earned when we respond promptly to our clients. When our client relationships are collectively owned by professionals across our firm and experience levels. When we identify an issue before it becomes a surprise. When we explain a complex matter clearly. And when our clients know that their business genuinely matters to us.

There will always be firms larger than Vrakas. We are an ambitious firm, but we are not pursuing growth simply to get bigger, nor do we measure success by whether our logo ends up on someone’s hat on the PGA Tour or whether our name appears on a recognition list. We measure success by helping our clients navigate challenging business situations, watching our people develop and find professional fulfillment, and staying steadfast in our long-term commitment to independence.

We intend to grow. We intend to evolve. But we also intend to remain unmistakably Vrakas.

That is the Vrakas Difference.
