So, what is this new Identity Protection PIN? Given by the IRS to eligible taxpayers, the Identity Protection PIN (“IP PIN”) is a six-digit code helping to prevent the continued misuse of Social Security numbers on fraudulent federal income tax returns. Basically, the IP PIN acts as extra protection to help the agency verify a taxpayer’s identity. After correctly identified with the IP PIN, his/her electronic or paper tax return will be accepted.
How do I get an IP PIN?
Well, not everyone can get one quite yet. If you are a confirmed victim of identity theft and the IRS has resolved your tax account issues, the agency will mail you a CP01A Notice with your IP PIN. In addition, to be eligible for 2020, you must have filed a federal return last year as a resident of the below list. This list is as of February and the list will grow in the future.
- Arizona
- California
- Colorado
- Connecticut

IP PIN Opt-In Program
Those taxpayers eligible must use the online “Get an IP PIN tool”. If you do not already have an account with the IRS, you must register to validate your identity. We encourage you to read about the secure access identity authentication process before attempting to register. It is also important to note that taxpayers cannot obtain an IP PIN by calling the IRS and it must be done online.
How do you use an IP PIN?
Provide the six-digit IP PIN to your trusted Vrakas CPAs + Advisors tax professional preparing your tax return. When it is not provided, a missing IP PIN will result in the rejection of your e-filed return or a delay of your paper return until it is verified.
DO NOT REVEAL YOUR IP PIN TO ANYONE! Your IP PIN should only be disclosed to your Vrakas CPAs + Advisors contact and when you are ready to sign and submit your return. Watch out for scams, as the IRS will NEVER ask for your IP PIN via phone, email or text.
For more details on using the IP PIN and the latest updates, we encourage you to contact us via phone (262.797.0400 – ask to speak with a tax professional regarding the IP PIN) or email (firm@vrakascpas.com).
